%X Research efforts in face image processing include face detection,face recognition,face tracking,pose estimation,expression recognition and so on.To build fully automated systems that analyze the information contained in face images,robust and efficient face detection algorithms are essentially required.The purpose of this paper is to categorize and evaluate these algorithms including knowledge-based methods,feature invariant approaches,template matching methods and appearance-based methods.After analyzing these algorithms and identifyig their limitations,we conclude with several promising directions for future research.
