%X The complexity of video encoders in the international standards of H.263, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and H.264, depends mainly on the block motion estimation algorithm. In order to make block motion estimation faster and more accurate, this paper proposed a novel fast and efficient algorithm, which is composed of the classification of macro block, the filter of motion vector, and effective half-stop criteria. Based on the characteristic of the homogenous of motion vector field, the algorithm achieves block motion estimation fast and efficiently by adaptively determining search origins and search measures of different blocks. Experiments show that the searching speed of our algorithm is close to that of N3SS and N4SS,and the quality of matching accuracy is superior to MVFAST and PMVFAST, which were adopted by the current MPEG-4.
