%X Coagulation process was tested to remove Cryptosporidium and Giardia microspheres in surface water from a reservoir in Xiamen. The effects of different parameters including coagulant types, dosages, and pH on these microspheres removal were studied. It was found that coagulation would be an efficient method in Cryptosporidium and Giardia removal (up to 4 lg). Polymer coagulants including PAC and PAFC were more suitable to be applied to remove the microspheres than traditional inorganic metal coagulants. Optimized operation condition for PAC application was: dosage of 40~70 mg/L and pH of 8; for PAFC was: dosage of 20~70 mg/L and pH of 6~8. The removal of Giardia microsphere using aluminum coagulants including PAC and aluminum sulfate was higher than that of Cryptosporidium microsphere, while the removal rate of Giardia microsphere using iron salt coagulants including PAFC, ferric sulfate was higher than that of Cryptosporidium microsphere. Overall, the removal of the two pathogen microspheres using aluminum coagulants was higher than that of iron salt coagulant.
