%X A novel stationary variational formula in spatial domain and in spectral domain respectively for calculation of planar line propagation constant is presented based on the exact theory of electromagnetic field. The formula only involves the electric field in the slot, which is applicable to closed as well as open planar and coplanar line structure. The calculation is simple and fast. The result of slot line agrees well with that of spectral domain method.
