%X The bacterial community in one deep-sea sediment sample from northern slope of the South China Sea was investigated by molecular methods.A phylogenetic analysis revealed that the bacterial population was composed of 5 major lineages of the domain bacteria,Proteobacteria(34%),Firmicutes(38%),Planctomycetes(18%),Cytopahga-Flexibacteria-Bacteroides(CFB)(4%) and Deferribacteres(6%).Over 60% clones were related with metabolism of sulfur,indicating the important role of sulfur cycle in this area.20% clones show high similarity with clones from an environment impacted by gasoline,indicating the existence of hydrocarbon from petroleum resources.
