%X The multi-soil-layering (MSL) system is one of the advanced constructed soil-based wastewater treatment systems. It has been developed and applied in Japan and Thailand for treating domestic and restaurant wastewater as well as polluted river water. With its special stick-like structure, the MSL system has several advantages over traditional land treatment technologies, such as higher hydraulic loading rates, higher nitrogen removal efficiency, and easier clogging control. This paper reviews the history and the current status of MSL system worldwide, focusing on the mechanism, efficiency and design parameters for effective removal of pollutants. The future perspectives of the MLS system is also discussed in detail.
