%X In order to calculate the time for stabilization, the biodegradation and stabilization process of biological and chemical sludge were investigated. It was found that 67.1%, 61.6% and 30.5% of organic matter in biological sludge, biological sludge+ chemical sludge and chemical sludge, respectively, degraded after 498 days. Higher initial content of organic matter in the sludge led to a higher degradation rate. Three years were needed for the sludge to reach stabilization when the content of organic matter was 100 mg·g-1, and 2.9 to 4.7 years were required if BDM was 4.76%. On-site monitoring of a large scale landfill showed that 3 years of placement would be enough for the sludge to reach stabilization and thus could be excavated. In this way, aged sludge can be recycled and the excavated space can be re-filled with fresh sludge.
