%X Valuation of ecosystem services (ES) integrates different aspects of several subjects such as ecology, economics, sociology and ethics, and it has become a hot topic of ecological research in the past few years. In this paper, we first discussed the content of the ES, and then reviewed the history and progress of the valuation of ES in the world and China. We pointed out that scientific community should focus on several topics in the near future to deepen the understanding of the values of ecosystems. These topics include the development of spatially and temporarily explicit dynamic valuation models, the analysis of driving forces for the spatial and temporal changes in the values of ES , uncertainty analysis of the values of ES, standardization of valuation methods, and payment for ES.
