%X The safety of Geotrichum candidum strain C3, produced from soybean and starch process wastes, as a source of single cell protein for animals was studied by means of chronic animal experiments as well as epidemiological and epizootic investigation. Daily feeding of powdered Geotrichum candidum (up to 25% in feeds) for two years failed to increase significantly tumour incidence or to cause early appearance of tumours in male Wistar rats and C57BL mice. No excess of cancer or fungal infection was observed among 338 workers exposed to Geotrichum for more than 10 years. Epizootic survey on domestic animals fed with the fungus and pathological appraisal of domestic animals fed with Geotrichum did not show any increased incidence of tumours as compared with natural controls.
