%X Three air particulate samples from different places in Beijing were studied by ESCA and Thermal Evolved Gas Analysis. It was found that in these samples sulfur is present mainly either in the form of sulfate or in the form of sulfide. Honeycomb briquets with different composite materials could emit smokes containing either of the two. Chemical states of nitrogen in these samples are more complex. Small amount of NO3- and/or NH4+ may be present in some samples, but the major species has been in the form of reduced nitrogen (called Nx), which have not yet been specified but showed stability during heating. Both coal and smokes from coal combustion may contain this kind of nitrogen.
