%X Fluoride has been one of the environmental chemical contaminants and has long become an important subject of toxjcological study. Although many investigations and studies have been made and shown that acute, subacute or chronic exposure to fluoride can cause fluorosis in organisms, studies on fluoride mutagenicity are few, and there are three kinds of experimental results and point of view: 1. non-mutagenic, 2. mutagenic and, 3. synergistic or antagonistic effect with other chemicals in the combined test. Hence, chromosomal aberrations, sister chromatid exchanges (SCE), and cell cycle kinetics in the cultured cells of Red Muntjac in vitro were used as indices in studying the mutagenic effects of sodium fluoride and fluoroacetamide. The results showed that both sodium fluoride and fluoroacetamide can cause chromosomal breakage, increase SCE frequency and lag cell cycle, but fluoroacetamide can cause only chromosomal breakage and lag cell cycle. Obviously, mutagenicity of fluoride can thus be confirmed once more by the results.
