%X Aquarium microcosms were used to study the effects of salinity of two inorganic salts on the growth and community structural changes of freshwater algae. The tested water and algae were sampled from a fishpond. Gradients of salinity were set as 3, 6, 9, and 12 g?L-1 with NaCl and Na2SO4, respectively. During the experimental periods, algae growth was stimulated in low salinity (3 g?L-1), while it was inhibited in higher salinity (higher than 6 g?L-1). Compared with NaCl, Na2SO4 showed stronger affects on the growth of algae. There was little effect on the change of the dominant species of algae. High salinity stress showed a considerable effect on the colonization and physiological conditions of Selenastrum westii.
