Cell growth and selenium uptake were monitored. Selenate (>0.5ppm Se) or selenite (> 0. 6ppm Se) inhibited C. roseus growth. Minimum lethal concentration (MLC) values were respectively 100 ppm Se(VI) and 2. 0 ppm Se (IV). Selenite was more toxic than selenate in the cell cultures. These compounds were enriched by C, roseus. In this plant-tissue culture, selenate and selenite had not antagonistic actions towards inorganic mercury. %K Catharanthus roseus %K selenium %K mercury %K cell culture %K antagonistic action
