%X As a case study, a quality model of one\|dimensional unsteady water was employed to compute the environmental water demand in the tidal river based on Shenzhen River. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to investigate the effects of pollution loading, supplemental water quality, tides and the disposal of effluent from wastewater treatment plants on the environmental water demand. Results showed that, the environmental water demand almost linearly increased with the pollution loading, and exponentially increased with the pollutant concentration of the supplemental water. It was found that there were not significant differences between the environmental water demands during spring and neap tides for Shenzhen River, while the impact of flood and ebb tides on the environmental water demand cannot be neglected. And results also indicated that the environmental water demand would greatly decrease if the effluent from wastewater treatment plants was transferred out of the Shenzhen River basin, or further purified and reused in the river. This study clearly demonstrated that understanding the variance of environmental water demand in tidal river would be helpful for decision\|making of comprehensive pollution control measures, such as wastewater interception, water supplement and disposal of wastewater treatment plants.
