%X By means of intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse or an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation,the environment for nitrogen removal in bioreactor landfill systems were constructed to study the performance of in Situ nitrogen removal from municipal refuse.The results showed that 88% of nitrogenous compound was released in the form of leachate during landfill stabilization.The nitrogen removal efficiency was good in the bioreactor landfill systems with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse or an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation,where the total nitrogen in leachate was only 28.7% and 14.3% of the control landfill at the end of the experiment.
