%X PbS-TiO2 nanocomposite thin films were prepared by a facile sol-gel process. The mircostructure, morphology, and tribological properties of the PbS-TiO2 films were investigated via X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and one-way reciprocating tribometer. The surfaces of the films were uniform and compact with a root-mean-square roughness about 0.24 nm. PbS particles in cubic phase were well dispersed in TiO2 matrix with a size of about 15 nm in diameter. The films sliding against GCr15 steel ball display an excellent wear-resistance and friction-reduction performance. With mole ratio of 10% PbS, the friction coefficient is only 0.11 and the wear life is about 3300 sliding cycles at a sliding speed of 90 mm/min and a load of 1.0 N. SEM observation suggests that the wear mechanism of the films in this case is slight scuffing, adhesion and abrasion.
