%X A method by employing elliptical micro-holes in the fiber core was proposed to achieve highly birefringent photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). Thrnaugh employing a full-vector finite-element method (FEM) and anisotropic perfectly matched layers, the birefringence property of highly birefringent PCFs with single, double or triple micro-holes in the fiber core was investigated, respectively. Simulation results show that birefringence property of PCFs is mainly dominated by the micro-holes in the fiber core and the birefringence has important relationship with the number and the parameters of the micro-holes, which can be further enhanced by increasing the number, area and ellipticity of elliptical micro-holes. Finally a PCF based on the fiber core of three rings of arrays of elliptical air holes was proposed and investigated, whose birefringence could be up to 2.7×10-3.
