%X Quaternary science is one of the branches of geology. The history of the development of Quaternary science in China could be divided into two stages. From 1909 to 1949 was the first stage. At that time, the scientific research was combined together with applying. Some society organizations gave geologic researches with the support on the funds. In the 1930′s,there were many great geologists in China. They gained a lot of achievements. The 100 years′ gap between China and the advanced countries was shortened to 50 years. It was a great progress. It was the second stage from 1950 to 2000. Geologists not only accomplished the assignment of nation, but also participated in the global change researches. It makes that the 50 years′ gap between China and advanced countries in the Quaternary was filled. At present, the Quaternary researches of our country is advanced at some aspects, such as loess, frozen earth, ice core, desert, and so on. At the same time, we are gaining the advance in several new directions, including deep sea, aerosol, paleoenvironment, environmental archeology and biogeochemisty. In Quaternary researches, China and advanced countries almost stand at the same scratch line now. At the initial stage of the 21st century, the author put forward ideas to the Quaternary researches in China, and named them studying the past is for the coming and the renaissance in geosciences is being called the future, respectively. The new situation of Quaternary researches in China also is evaluated. Chinese geologists should put forward the theories by themselves. There are a lot of researchers of Quaternary in China. The author convinces that as long as we deal with the theories and the researches correctly, the new theories certainly can appear.The popularization of science contributes to raising people′s character, and also contributes to cultivating person of ability.As for the Quaternary science in China, it is utmost importance to cultivate person of ability. A lot of young people will devote themselves into the Quaternary science. The Quaternary science has the superiority at two aspects. On one hand, geosciences ask strengthening the researches on Quaternary. On the other hand, sciences beyond the geosciences are being linked up with the Quaternary researches. Therefore, what is faced with in the Quaternary is a promising situation. The greater progress will be gained in the Quaternary researches, no matter being on the regional project or on global change researches. In the decades coming soon, even more chances will be provided to scientists in Quaternary researches in China. They will give full play to one′s remarkable skill. The 21st century will be the times of information revolution, and also will be the times of life science and technology. The 21st century will be the times that person will be harmonious with the nature. Luster will be added for the 21st century by the achievement of geosciences.
