%X In this paper, the WKB method is applied to investigating nonlinear Rossby waves with weakly shear zonal flow and weak dissipation in the atmosphere, and a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with complex coefficients for nonlinear Rossby waves is obtained. On the other hand, the side - band stability problems of Rossby wavetrains with no dissipation and weak dissipation are discussed, respectively, and some new results are derived.
