%X Successful applications in point to point transport system,the potential capability of WDM based technologies has been well realized.Among the numerous merits of WDM optical transport network,the excellent features shown in fault recovery are attractive.The R&D activities in OA&M techniques of the WDM optical transport network have achieved lots of conclusions,even standards,such as the layer architecture of optical network,some practical fault recovery method,and the management framework basing on TMN.This paper discusses the functional mechanism of the protection approaches used in optical networks,using the functional architecture specification defined for generic transport network to analyze the functional architecture of protection switching of optical networks.This is important,because it is the foundation for establishing the fault management information model of optical transport networks.
