%X Raw waters contaminated with nitrate present a serious problems to drinking water source in many countries. Heterotrophic denitrification is one of the main techniques to remove nitrate from water. Adopting economical solid organic carbon sources, such as cotton, wheat straw and so on, can simplify the treatment process and cut down the operational cost. However, it may deteriorate the effluent water quality when used for removing nitrate from drinking water. Denitrification system using biodegradable polymers (BDPs) as both carbon sources and biofilm carriers is capable of adapting to the loading shock of influent water quality and it will not contaminate the effluent water because they have no harmful impact to human health. With the development of new kinds of BDPs material and the reduction of BDPs production cost, BDPs may receive more and more attention in nitrate removal for drinking water source.
