%X Ultramicrohardness tester has been used to test the hardness in the different microzones ofaluminum matrix composites reinforced by fibers or particulates. It is found that the ultramicrohardness value increases apparently near the interface, and that the hardness has an intimate relation with the propertiesof reinforcement and the matrix, the characteristic of the interface and the size, shape and distribution of thereinforcement. The heterogeneity will affeCt the macroscopic properties and the size stability of the comPOsites.
