%X The surface of natural collagen was modified by low temperature plasma with oxygen and argon seperately. Natural collagen was extracted and purified from bovine tendon by enzyme digestion.Crosslinked collagen membranes were then prepared from a 0.8% (w / v) solution in 0. 3% malonic acid. After treating by low temperature plasma, their surface characteristics were investigated by means of ESCA,IR, XRD and contact angle measurement. The results of ESCA and IR shows that the ratios of main functional groups upon plasma modified collagen surface such as carbonyl- (> C = O), carboxyl- (-COOH),amino- (NH2) and hydroxyl- (-OH) groups have changed significantly. The results of XRD also suggest the occurence of considerable structural changes. With water and CH2I2, contact angles decrease and surface energies increase after modification. The conclusion is that low temperature plasma treatment can substantially alter the surface properties of collagen material by ways of increasing the amount of polar functional groups exposed on the sample surface thus enhancing its hydrophilicity.Correspondent ZHANG Qiqing, Professor, Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences,P.O.
