%X Mention is often made in the literature of markedness in gradable antonyms and relational oposites, Theis paper attempts an exploration into the two states of this concept: markedness and unmarkedness and their realization in these two types of opposites, It is pointed out that semantic markedness is a variable and that under the normal conditions the degrees of markedness in gradable antonyms are greater than those of relational opposites. This difference is then given a functional explanation.
