Approximately 5 times the amount of Calli were produced in liquid as compared to an agar solidified medium. A significantly higher percentage of calli also was observed by the use of gelrite, potato starch, sweet potato starch and sulable starch instead of agar as the gelling agents. Potato starch was the best one among the tested gelling agents. The percentage of calli on the potato starch medium was 5.2 times higher than that on agar medium and was similar then that of the liquid medium. Eight genotypes were used in the study, seven genotypes showed higher percentage of callus induction in potato starch modium and the average frequency was 1.15 times higher than the control. The highest frequency was found in variety BC 163 and it was 7.75 times higher as compared to the agar medium. Besides, potato starch was cheaper than agar when used in the medium, Results showed that agar in anther culture medium could be replaced by potato starch. %K
