%X As the remarkable characteristic of every eukaryotic chromosome, the centromere is the structural and functional element that ensures the normal split and separation of chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis. It is involved in processes such as homologous chromosome pairing, sister chromatid adhesion and separation, and some of the regulation initiated during anaphase. Here we review some of recent progress in research into the structure and function of centromeres.
