%X Surrounding rock masses of underground engineering are of high nonlinear characteristics,so their mechanical behavior can be studied and predicted by nonlinear theories. Research is made on surrounding rock stability with dissipative structure theory and catastrophe theory to unveil procedures and causes of rock failure. A method is developed to analyze the stability of surrounding rock masses.
