%X A methodology of back analysis on the mechanical parameters of slope excavated in rock masses is illustrated, based on the combination of the elasto-viscoplastic finite element method and the complex shape minimum method. Special attention has been paid to the simulation of the variation of the parameter because of the blasting and the stress unloading relax ation. The slope excavated in the granite rock mass situated at the ship lock of the Three Gorges Project is studied. According to the mechanical parameters of the rock masses from back analysis, the deformation and stability of the rock slope are forecasted in time as going on of the slope excavation. The important conclusion has been made that the whole slope is stable but local failure can occur during the construction. The maximum displacement can be controlled within 50 mm at the top of the ship lock chamber and 80 mm at the top of slope, and the maximum residual displacement is 2.63 mm which will be completed within 7 to 8 months alter the completion of the excavation.
