%X Field observations and measurements have confirmed the existence of high horizontal insitu stresses in many geological formations around the globe. The positive and negative impacts on rock engineerings of high horizontal in-situ stresses are discussed in this paper based on the principles of rock mechanics. Some related practical cases are also given in the paper.
