%X The swelling characteristics of bentonite and sand-bentonite mixture were studied by laboratory tests, which were conducted on an oedometer apparatus. A general relationship between swelling strain and overburden pressure is proposed by the test results. It is shown by the test results that the swelling characteristics are related to the sample compaction conditions, and the swelling deformation takes place due to the interaction between montmorillonite and water.
