%X TiAl base composites reinforced by submicron Al2O3 particles were produced by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) in use of the exothermic reaction of Al-Ti-TiO2 system. The reaction process was investigated with phase analysis of DTA samples quenched at different temperatures. The results indicate that the thermite reduction of TiO2 involves several transitional stages and its initiatory temperature is lowered by prior reactions between Al and Ti, Ti and TiO2.
