%X Through different sample lengths the attenuation coefficient of laser beam with different pulse energy was measured experimentally in water. And the effect of stimulated Brillouin scattering on the attenuation characteristics of water was studied. It was found that the attenuation coefficient is dependent on the pulse energy and the line width of the laser, but not a constant, as usually assumed to be. Theoretical analysis is also given.
