%X Nocardia tartaricans SW13-57, a high-yielding strain for producing cis-epoxysuccinate hydrolase (ESH) was screened from 65 Nocardia strains. The conditions for enzyme formation of the strain were examined. The suitable carbon source of the medium was propanediol and the suitable nitrogen source was (NH4)2SO4. The optimum temperature and initial pH for enzyme formation were 30t and pH7.0 respectively. Sodium cis-epoxysuccinate was an effective inducer for enzyme formation. When the organism was cultured in the 14 L fermentor under the optimum conditions for 24 - 30h,about 40 -120u / g dry cell weight of specific activity was obtained.
