%X Based on approaches of herbalism and phytotaxonomy,ancient and modern literature on Chinese gentian root was analyzed systematically.The result showed that the origin of Chinese gentian root varied from the single origin Gentiana scabra Bge.before the Five dynasty to the two-origin Chinese gentian root,which are G.scabra Bge.and G.manshurica Kitag.,after Song dynasty.And then the four-origin Chinese gentian root appeared with some substitute and fake materials.The producing area and authenticity have also been changed from place to place historically.The collecting and preparing methods innovated continually.The medicinal properties,action and utilization developed constantly in clinic practice.
