%X The Herb Genome Program (HerbGP) is introduced here based on next-generation sequencing techniques including Roche/454 GS FLX, Illumina/Solexa and ABI/SOLiD. The methodology for the HerbGP is illustrated in detail in terms of genome size measurement, whole-genome sequencing, genome assembly, genome annotation and re-sequencing. The HerbGP will improve the application of new technology and method in Chinese medicinal research, making the traditional Chinese medicine a frontier in modern life sciences.
