%X Aluminum (Al) toxicity has been widely considered to be the most important growth-limiting factor for plants in strongly acid soils (pH<5.0). Toxic Al ions around root systems may affect the capacity for mineral nutrient acquisition and increase the risk of Al stress for plant species. Al-induced exudation of organic acids, biological enzymes and other compounds from roots is specific to Al tolerance in some plant species. Three principal mechanisms (external, internal and genic) of plants for adaptation to tolerant and avoid soil Al toxicity are introduced in this review. Finally, the trends for the future development in this field are prospected.
