%X To approach the mechanisms of the barrier effect of litter layer on the natural regeneration of forests is of theoretical and practical significance in the scientific management of secondary forests and in adopting proper methods to improve the natural regeneration of target tree species.From the aspects of physical interdiction(physical factors),allelopathy(chemical factors),and animal invasion and microbial infection(biological factors),this paper discussed the barrier effect and mechanisms of litter layer on forest natural regeneration.It was suggested that further studies should be made on the structure of litter layers under different forest types,and the change patterns of photon density and red light/far-red light ratio under litter layer.
