%X The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2004 was awarded to Aaron Ciechanover, Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose, for their discovery of the ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation (proteolysis). Their discoveries are reviewed here in a historical perspective. Lessons that might be learned from their experiences are discussed.
