%T Gender Differences in the Reasons for Participation in Spouse Sharing among the Okun in Nigeria

%X This report examines the reasons for participation in spouse sharing among the Okun with a view to identifying some factors that may present particular obstacles to women and enhance their vulnerability to the practice. A total of 1029 sexually active respondents in 5 settlements where spouse sharing is being practiced participated in the questionnaire survey aspect of the study, while 82 respondents participated in the focus group discussions. About 65% of respondents reported having ale or alase and were involved in the practice of spouse sharing. Reasons for involvement in spouse sharing include the need for economic support, sexual satisfaction, increased social status, procreation, the problems of separation/divorce and widowhood. The focus group discussions revealed a possible exploitation of the gender-based economic weakness of the women by the men in the initiation and sustenance of the practice in the Okun communities. It is recommended that for any program to achieve a considerable reduction in the practice, differences in the reasons for participation in spouse sharing among the men and women must be documented with a view to solving those problems that compel women to participate. Ce rapport ¨¦tudie les raisons pour la participation au partage d'¨¦poux chex les Okun afin d'identifier quelques facteurs qui peuvent poser des probl¨¨mes aux femmes et augmenter leur vuln¨¦rabilit¨¦ ¨¤ la pratique. Au total 1029 r¨¦pondants qui ¨¦taient sexuellement actives, r¨¦sidant dans 5 villages ou l'on pratique le partage d'¨¦poux, ont particip¨¦ ¨¤ l'aspect de l'enqu¨ºte ¨¤ l'aide des questionnaires, alors que 82 r¨¦pondants ont particip¨¦ aux discussions ¨¤ groupe cible. Environ 65% des r¨¦pondants ont d¨¦clar¨¦ ¨ºtre en possession de ale ou alase et qu'ils sont impliqu¨¦s dans la pratique du partage d'¨¦poux. Les raisons pour la participation au partage d'¨¦poux comprennent le besoin du soutien ¨¦conomique, la satisfaction sexuelle, le statut social hauss¨¦, la procr¨¦ation, les probl¨¨mes de la s¨¦paration/du divorce et du veuvage. Les discussions ¨¤ groupe cible ont r¨¦v¨¦l¨¦ une exploitation possible de la faiblesse ¨¦conomique fond¨¦e sur le parti pris contre les femmes par les hommes en ce qui concerne l'initiation et le maintien de la pratique dans les communaut¨¦s Okun. L'¨¦tude affirme que pour qu'un programme accomplisse une r¨¦duction importante dans la pratique, d'¨¦poux parmi les hommes et les femmes afin de r¨¦soudre les probl¨¨mes-l¨¤ qui obligent les femmes ¨¤ y participer.
