Discovering the structure of DNA in 1953 and invention the PCR has been the cornerstones of recent progressively developed methodologies for investigation the genetic structure and variability of forest tree populations. More than 20 years ago was carried out the first modification of the forest tree genome and there have been success also in this field. Due to uncertainty of possible impact of GM trees pollen and behavior in the nature the use of them is strictly regulated by law. Silvicultural regimes in light of genetic aspects are covered in the present study. Influence of import of forest reproductive material and results obtained from provenance trials are discussed. Theory and results of tree breeding presented. An overview regards the international processes and agreements which will have relevant influence on pertinent developments in practice and in research in the future is given. %K conservation of forest genetic resources %K forest management %K genetics %K genetically modified trees %K historical overview %K tree breeding %K polymerase chain reaction %K provenance trials %U http://versita.metapress.com/content/k5n5184680643671/?p=2007471cf2a54d23a852890fad7c55c5&pi=5
