%X this exploratory study aimed at determining the level of stress, hardin and its correlation with the shift among 72 nurses at a teaching hospital in vit¨®ria-esp¨ªrito santo. data was collected through a structured questionnaire. the results indicated that nurses who work the night shift show high levels of stress and lower values for hardiness and control challenge. despite the impossibility of generalizing the results, they serve to alert the nurses to the level of stress and the impact on the life of the night shift worker. they also allow a glimpse of hardiness as a proposal for intervention by the nurse to insert a greater capacity for tolerance to stress.
