%X estimation of the burden of disease attributable to smoking has now become standard in documenting the impact of the tobacco epidemic and in motivating tobacco control. this paper addresses the methods used to estimate the attributable burden of mortality and the related estimation of morbidity and economic costs. estimates of attributable mortality and morbidity for the americas range widely, reflecting the maturity of the tobacco epidemic. the estimates are highest for the united states, and lower for mexico and other countries of the americas.
