%X this article gives a panoramic vision of the life and work of the venezuelan thinker julio c¨¦sar salas, outlining his sociological, anthropologic and historical analysis of venezuelan and continental reality. liberalism impregnates his political and economical proposals, and led him to be a vigorous opponent of juan vicente gomezs government. being a freethinker, positivist, and militant evolutionist, as follower of the ideas of auguste comte and herbert spencer, he was excommunicated from the catholic church. this made of salas a critical thinker in the face of politics, economy, society and history and all venezuelan and latin-american reality of his time.
