Policl¨ªnico Pedro Borr¨¢s, Pinar del R¨ªo %A P¨¦rez Hern¨¢ndez %A Leyda Yenima %A de Armas C¨¢ndano %A Anabel %A Fuentes Ayala %A Eridalia %A Rosell Puentes %A Francisco %A Urrutia D¨ªaz %A Dayanet %J Revista de Ciencias M£¿£¿dicas de Pinar del R£¿-o %D 2011 %I Editorial Ciencias M¨¦dicas %X aimed at determining the prevalence of periodontal disease and its relation to risk factors a cross sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 426 patients from 15 to 59 years old, the universe was comprised of 871 inhabitants to 5 medical offices belonging to the health area of "pedro borras" outpatient clinic, pinar del rio during august 2007 to december 2008. in this study the methods of sample per two-stage conglomerates and simple random were used. the revision of periodontal index, oral hygiene, the preparation of a clinical history to collect periodontal data, information of patients, and risk factors for periodontal diseases as well as a survey to determine the level of knowledge about these diseases were taken as set of variables. punctual prevalence rate was calculated with an interval of 95% of certainty and the difference among qualitative variables by means of chi square test (x2); the association among qualitative variables was found using x2 and odds ratio to 95% of certainty. achieving 62, 4% of prevalence for periodontal disease in male and female sex and the group of ages in the study. besides; gingivitis was the most representative with 48, 1%. the disease showed a high prevalence, though mild forms were the most frequent with 71, 4% and the relation between periodontal disease and deficient oral hygiene as well as low level of knowledge about oral health resulted very significant. %K periodontal disease %K gingivitis %K periodontitis. %U http://scielo.sld.cu/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&pid=S1561-31942011000200006&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en
