%X this article is the result of research carried out during the second year of doctorate periphery, sustainability and urban vitality at the higher technical school of architecture, universidad polit¨¦cnica de madrid. its purpose is to analyze the relationship between security of tenure and informal settlements in most of latin american cities; it tries to answer the following research question: can the implemented instruments in these countries guarantee tenure security for people living in informal settlements? to achieve this goal, we carried out a comparative study of national instruments in three different countries of latin america: brazil, colombia and peru.
