%X 10 patients diagnosed with macular degeneration related to age at the retina department of the ophthalmology service of "comandante faustino p¨¦rez" university hospital, in matanzas, from september 2003 to july 2004, were studied. the main clinical characteristics that made possible its diagnosis, the determination of the risk factors, as well as the measures to prevent the progress of the disease were exposed. 30 % of the cases presented the neovascular clinical form of macular degeneration related to age, whose diagnosis was confirmed by fluoresceingraphy and coherent optical tomography in the retina department of ram¨®n pando ferrer cuban institute of ophthalmology
