%X introduction: a cross-sectional on prevalence was conducted in the north area of the sancti spiritus city from january, 2006 to december, 2009. objective: to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome according the criteria of the latin-american of diabetes. methods: the study universe included persons aged 16 or more from 20 randomized consulting rooms, which accounted for the 40 % of north area total. the averaged sample was of 913 persons where 1 019 were polled and assessed. the 93,62 % were residents of urban area. home selection was made through a randomized number table. results: global prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased significantly with age of the person (3 50 years old) with a body mass index (3 25 kg/m2) with the urban origin persons and with the glucose metabolism deterioration. conclusions: prevalence of metabolic in study population is high.
