%X the aim of this article is to analyze how the social upheaval and religious controver-sies that occurred in the victorian era, which eventually led to a sort of liberal relaxation of the english social customs, are reflected in the works of three of the main literary figures at that time. the three authors under focus belong to the oxford movement, initiated in oriel college and already in its cradle when an outstanding figure emerged relevantly, the future roman church cardinal john h. newman. related to the above movement, two other prominent figures are worth mentioning, arthur h. clough and matthew arnold, whose most well known poems meant a perceptive vehicle that intended to criticize religion and society.
