%X Se describe un estudio experimental tendiente a esclarecer si algunas de las modificaciones superficiales conocidas como improntas de hojas en negativo presentes en vestigios de alfarer¨ªa encontradas recientemente en San Mart¨ªn de los Andes, Argentina y tambi¨¦n en la regi¨®n Centro-Sur de Chile, aunque en esta ¨²ltima ampliamente documentadas, constituyen una modalidad estil¨ªstica singular o son el resultado involuntario del proceso de cocci¨®n de las vasijas cer¨¢micas. Los resultados refuerzan a la primera hip¨®tesis, mientras que la segunda no pudo ser demostrada. De esta manera, consideramos a las evidentes improntas de hojas negativas como una modalidad estil¨ªstica y a la t¨¦cnica de manufactura como "reserva". This paper describes an experimental approach developed in order to determine if the surface modifications known as negative-leaf imprints found on archaeological pottery from recently excavated sites at San Martin de los Andes, Argentina well-documented throughout South Central Chile were the result of an artistic choice or an inadvertent by-product of the firing process. Our results support the first hypothesis over the second. Thus we conclude that these negative-leaf imprints represents a stylistic tool developed by the Southern Andean pottery artists and the manufacturing technique as a type of "reserve".
