%X Since romanticism in the nineteenth century, meaningless existence is an important theme in French literature. From ¡°century child¡± to ¡°outsider¡±, people are suffering from this painful torture of survival status. Since the absurd theater of twentieth century and the new novel, meaningless anxiety is marked by colors of numbness and coldness. The Map and the Territory reflects the profound consideration of Michel Houellebecq on the reason for being of the modern consumer society. By description of the hero, Michel Houellebecq invites readers to reflect on the situation of modern survival. In a money-first, rapid-consumption society, numbness and apathy of Jed are also the numbness and apathy of our ordinary people. De   l¡¯enfant du si¨¨cle   ¨¤   l¡¯¨¦tranger  , l¡¯homme souffre beaucoup du non-sens de son existence. Au xxe si¨¨cle, depuis le th¨¦atre de l¡¯absurde et le nouveau roman, l¡¯angoisse du non-sens de la vie se teint de l¡¯apathie et de l¡¯indiff¨¦rence. Par La carte et le territoire, Michel Houellebecq nous invite ¨¤ r¨¦fl¨¦chir avec lui sur la raison d¡¯¨ºtre de l¡¯homme moderne dans la soci¨¦t¨¦ de consommation. Au travers de son personnage principal, Houellebecq nous fait d¨¦couvrir la situation existentielle de l¡¯homme. Dans une soci¨¦t¨¦ soumise au r¨¨gne de l¡¯argent et la vitesse de consommation, l¡¯apathie et l¡¯indiff¨¦rence de Jed sont aussi les n tres.
